Launched in 2017 by Professor Kokila Lakhoo (President of GICS), Professor Vrisha Madhuri (Professor of Paediatric Orthopaedics, Christian Medical College) and Mr Richard Stewart (President of British Association of Paediatric Surgeons), the Oxford-Vellore GICS Project provides training sessions for district hospital teams in basic skills for children’s surgery. The adult teams are made up of a general surgeon, orthopaedic surgeon, anaesthetist, ward, and theatre nurse. The project was designed with guidance from the district hospital teams as to the needs of children’s surgical care at district hospital level, and three pilot studies were conducted from 2017 to 2019.
The next step is for this programme to be rolled out in Africa and the plans are for the first such programme to start in Tanzania in the latter half of this year.
