Pain management in a conflict zone
Following visits to the West Bank and Israel in 2013, Tony Jefferis and others made an exploratory visit to Gaza in 2015 to undertake a needs analysis of their palliative care.
The team was supported by Edinburgh University Global Health Academy and led by Mhoira Leng, a Scottish physician with unrivalled experience of palliative care in resources poor settings.
The initial visit identified two major areas where interventions would be helpful: the first was in the supply of opiates for pain relief, and the second to support teaching of medical students. This teaching has continued, in person and on line for the past five years. A team of physicians, nurses and one surgeon run a teaching course on pain management, the management of chronic disease and the whole patient care of the dying.
This course runs in series with the Oxford University clinical skills course led by Nick Maynard for final year students, which a large number of Oxford based clinicians support.
